Vodka sauce has always been an indulgence that you may make from scratch for a special occasion or when dining at your favorite Italian joint. Traditional vodka sauce is made using heavy cream, which quickly racks up the calories and artery-clogging saturated fat, but these days you can find jarred brands that make better-for-you vodka sauce options. However, navigating through the sea of vodka sauces can get confusing, because there are many more than you may think!

Luckily, we researched for you and found the better-for-you brands to choose from and some you may want to skip. Interestingly, there are quite a bit of tasty jarred recipes that don't use a lot of heavy cream and are still rather tasty. Below you'll find the best and worst vodka sauces on grocery shelves, so the next time you're at the market, you know which brand is a better choice.

How we chose the best vodka sauces

When evaluating vodka sauces, the three main nutrients we looked at per half-cup serving were:

  • Calories
  • Saturated Fat
  • Sodium

The saturated fat tended to increase dramatically when heavy cream was used as a primary ingredient—so reading the ingredient list was another factor we looked at. In addition, most vodka sauces do have quite a bit of sodium, so keeping portions in check and being mindful of your sodium intake for the rest of the day is always important.

Read on to learn which jars are the best and which are the worst. Then, make sure to check out the 11 Best Pastas on Grocery Shelves.

Half a cup of this vodka sauce provides 18% of the daily value of saturated fat, 6% of the daily value of added sugar, and 20% of the daily value of sodium (based on a 2,000-calorie diet). "This nutrient profile makes it more challenging to keep sodium, saturated fat, and added sugars below recommended daily limits, especially when you consider that people may serve themselves more than ½ cup of sauce," explains Malkani.

Worst: Hoboken Farms Vodka Sauce

Hoboken Farms Vodka Sauce

Per ½ cup: 130 calories, 10 g fat (4.5 g saturated fat), 440 mg sodium, 8 g carbs (1 g fiber, 3 g sugar), 2 g protein

Although this vodka sauce is gluten-free with no preservatives, it is made with heavy cream which drives the saturated fat up. This means for every half-cup serving, you'll be taking in 23% of the daily recommended amount of artery-clogging saturated fat—and that's quite a bit coming from a sauce.

Experts consistently emphasize the importance of eating enough fiber when it comes to our longevity and overall health. Yet, the harsh truth remains: a significant majority of us fall short of the recommended daily fiber intake. According to Samantha MacLeod, MS, RDN, "More than 90% of women and 97% of men do not meet recommended intakes for dietary fiber.

"The standard recommendation, based on the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, is 14 grams of fiber for every 1,000 calories," says McLeod. For instance, women aged 19-30, consuming 2,000 calories daily, should ideally aim for 28 grams of fiber, while men in the same age group with a 2,400-calorie intake should target 34 grams.

Fiber intake is so crucial because studies show that meeting these daily fiber goals can support a healthy gut microbiome, reduce the risk of heart disease, and help regulate weight and blood glucose levels. The key is incorporating fiber into every meal—and snacks!—to ensure a steady flow of fiber throughout the day.

However, the unfortunate reality is that many readily available packaged snacks lack the fiber content we need. So, how can you add fiber to your diet without compromising on taste or convenience? We spoke to registered dietitians to discover the healthiest store-bought, high-fiber snacks that not only help you meet your daily requirements but also satisfy your taste buds.

How to choose healthy high-fiber snacks at the grocery store:

First things first—we have to define what a "high-fiber snack" is. For our list, a snack is considered "high fiber" if it contains at least 3 grams of fiber. "If a snack is 150-200 calories, then 2-3 grams of fiber would be the typical recommendation for a snack. Anything above that would be considered 'high fiber,'" says McLeod.

While we've done the legwork for you to come up with this list, if you're shopping for your own high-fiber snacks, registered dietitian Lauren Manaker, RD has some tips, starting with the nutrition panel on the product packaging.

Here's what she looks for on a nutrition label:

  • "First, look for the 'Dietary Fiber' content; a good high-fiber snack should have at least 3 grams per serving.
  • Second, assess the 'Total Carbohydrate' content. While fiber is a type of carbohydrate, it doesn't impact blood sugar the same way other carbs do, so it's beneficial to choose snacks with a higher ratio of fiber to total carbs.
  • Finally, keep an eye on the 'Ingredients' list. The best high-fiber snacks have whole foods like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes listed as the first ingredients, not sugars or processed grains."

We've scoured the nutrition panels and ingredients for you to find these 38 high-quality, high-fiber snacks:

Trader Joe's is often praised for its extensive snack selection, boasting all kinds of sweet and salty delights. Among the plethora of options is one breakfast-inspired product that now has shoppers buzzing.

First launched in 2023 for a limited time, the Maple Pancake Flavored Puffs recently hit stores again, sparking major excitement from customers. The snack consists of corn and rice puffs featuring the "rich, sweet, and salty flavors of a syrup-covered flapjack stack," as described on the bag. Additionally, this snack is vegan and gluten-free. As reported by Instagram user @traderjoesnew, each bag costs $2.49.

Since this sweet and crunchy snack returned to shelves, shoppers have shared glowing reviews of the item.

"I can't believe how good these are. Never saw them before and I'm going to buy three bags on my next trip. 10/10!" one Reddit user wrote.

"These are addictive. I got one bag last year to try them out, LOVED them, and when I went back for another couple bags, they were gone. So stock up quick! I spent 12 months dreaming about them!" another one added.

Someone else went as far as calling these maple-flavored puffs "the greatest TJ's snack item ever."

Additionally, some Redditors compared this snack to the Beaver Nuggets sold at Buc-ee's, the Texas-based convenience store chain. It's unclear how long this product will be available, with one Reddit user noting that it's a "seasonal" item.

The Maple Pancake Flavored Puffs aren't the only Trader Joe's items sparking notable attention on social media. The new Jalapeño & Cream Cheese Crispy Wontons have also been generating customer conversation. Priced at $4.99, each box includes 12 wontons filled with a combination of cream cheese, Parmesan, and diced jalapeños.

Since this is a frozen item, customers can heat up the wontons in the oven for 10-12 minutes or the air fryer for five to seven minutes, according to the product's instructions. Shoppers will also want to grab a dipping sauce because despite one being featured on the packaging, there isn't one included with the wontons.

The post The Best & Worst Grocery Chains in America, According to New Data appeared first on Eat This Not That.

]]>
With so many national and regional grocery chains populating the United States nowadays, Americans have a plethora of retailers to choose from when they need to restock their fridges and pantries. But are some of those chains superior to others? At least according to new data, the answer is yes.

Solitaired, an online gaming site, recently set out on a mission to pinpoint the best and worst grocery stores in America using Google reviews. As part of the study, it looked at star ratings for individual stores from prominent grocery chains in the United States. It then used that data to calculate an average rating for each chain. Some brands stood out far more than others, both for positive and negative reasons.

RELATED: 11 Most Affordable Grocery Chains Right Now

The study ultimately ranked Trader Joe's, which had an average rating of 4.638, as the best grocery chain in the country. This ranking is far from surprising considering the massive fanfare that tends to surround Trader Joe's.

Trader Joe's exterior

However, several other brands weren't too far behind the beloved grocer. Costco and Wegmans tied for second place with average ratings of 4.6.

"These ratings indicate a high level of customer satisfaction and consistent performance across these major chains," Solitaired wrote in reference to Trader Joe's, Costco's, and Wegmans' scores.

RELATED: 11 Best Costco Deals To Score in February

Publix, Central Market, H-E-B, WinCo Foods, Lidl, Aldi, and The Fresh Market were also among the top 10 highest-rated grocers.

On the flip side, King Soopers had the lowest average rating (3.938) out of the major chains considered in the study. King Soopers is a Kroger subsidiary that operates more than 100 stores across Colorado and Wyoming.

King Soopers exterior

The discount grocer Save A Lot had the second-lowest score of 4.019, while Kroger came in third with a rating of 4.023. Walmart, Giant Eagle, Acme, Safeway, Piggly Wiggly, Jewel-Osco, and Fred Meyer were also among the 10 lowest-rated grocers in the study.

RELATED: 7 Best Discount Grocery Chains in America

Of course, this data doesn't mean consumers can't have positive shopping experiences at chains like King Soopers and Save A Lot. But it does indicate that those chains are generally rated lower than high-ranking rivals like Trader Joe's and Costco.

The new study from Solitaired is only the latest attempt to determine which American grocery chain tops all of the others. Earlier this month, data analytics firm dunnhumby ranked H-E-B as America's top grocery retailer in its seventh annual Retailer Preference Index (RPI). That was the third time that H-E-B, a regional grocer concentrated in Texas, has snagged the top ranking in the annual dunnhumby study.

Leaving your home to shop for a big grocery haul might be a tough sell in the season of frosty windows and chilly winds. Whether it's the cold temperatures or the gray, overcast skies, winter is the time of the year when it seems natural to relax, cozy up on the couch, and reach for comfort foods that warm you up inside.

Comfort food is often nostalgic, and it also tends to be higher in calories, fat, sugar, and sodium. That doesn't mean that there's no room for it in your diet. As long as the indulgence is balanced out with fresh and whole foods, you can enjoy feeding your soul with your favorite comfort foods every now and then.

Trader Joe's is the comfort food of grocery stores. Among the aisles of prepared foods, snacks, and desserts, you'll find plenty of highly rated options to stash in your freezer or pantry for those inevitable rainy days. Do yourself a favor and grab some of these 15 items the next time you shop at TJ's. Your future self will be, oh, so comfy.

]]>
With its gut-supporting probiotics, calcium, and protein, yogurt is a go-to healthy snack for many. However, not all store-bought brands are as nutritious as others. Some yogurts can quickly turn unhealthy based on the amount of sugar certain products incorporate.

All dairy foods, including yogurt, contain a natural sugar called lactose, so seeing a bit of sugar on the nutrition label is normal. The problem exists when companies sweeten the pot with added sugars. So, despite their health claims, these high-sugar yogurts might not be your best bet. Some could even rival the sugar content found in a scoop of Haagen Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream.

While minor amounts of added sugar in your diet are fine, consistent consumption of excessive added sugar has been associated with increased risk for heart disease, diabetes, and inflammation. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends a daily intake of less than 25 grams for women and 36 grams for men to help lower this risk. Unfortunately, certain yogurts approach or surpass these daily limits in just one serving.

To aid in identifying these less healthy yogurt choices, we have compiled a list of products with the highest sugar content available at the store. Read on to see which yogurts have the most sugar, ranked from lowest to highest amounts, then check out some better-for-you options with these 13 Best Yogurt Brands you can buy.

Dannon Fruit at the Bottom Cherry

Dannon fruit on the bottom

Sugar per serving: 15 grams (11 grams added sugar)

With 15 grams of sugar per carton, Dannon Fruit On The Bottom is more like a dessert than a healthy snack. If you're craving some fruity flavors, try plain Greek yogurt with some fresh berries instead.

So Delicious Coconutmilk Yogurt Key Lime Pie

So Delicious Key Lime

Sugar per serving: 16 grams (15 grams added sugar)

Just because something is non-dairy doesn't guarantee that it is healthy, especially because oftentimes dairy alternatives are made with added sugar to help create more flavor. The SO Delicious Key Lime Coconutmilk Yogurt is a good example, with 16 grams of sugar in one carton–15 of which are added sugars.

Silk Dark Chocolate Coconut

Silk Dark Chocolate

Sugar per serving: 16 grams (16 grams added sugar)

This almond milk yogurt from Silk is another example of a high-sugar product. There are no milk sugars or natural sugars found in here, so all 16 grams of sugar are added. Instead of buying the Dark Chocolate Coconut, try Silk's Plain Almond Yogurt, which has only 6 grams of sugar.

Oui by Yoplait Strawberry

Oui Strawberry

Sugar per serving: 19 grams (14 grams added sugar)

Out is Yoplait's French-style yogurt line. These yogurts are thicker and creamier than Yoplait's original products, but a lot of the choices are loaded with sugars. Their Strawberry Fruit On The Bottom has 19 grams of sugar per 5-ounce container, with 14 grams of those being added.

Yo Crunch M&M's

Yo Crunch

Sugar per serving: 19 grams (15 grams added sugar)

If you're eating this M&M-filled yogurt by Yo Crunch, you may want to save it for dessert instead of a mid-afternoon snack. It has a hefty 15 grams of added sugar per container and only 4 grams of protein, so it definitely won't leave you satiated.

Chobani Flip Coffee Brownie Bliss

Chobani flip brownie bliss

Sugar per serving: 19 grams (15 grams added sugar)

Chobani Flips are a tasty pre-portioned dessert with yogurt and pieces of cookies, chocolate, or fruit, but because of its high sugar count, you're better off saving these as a once-in-a-while treat.

Yoplait French Vanilla

yoplait french vanilla

Sugar per serving: 20 grams (14 grams added sugar)

The original Yoplait is a classic yogurt, but be careful before dipping into the nostalgia. A small 6-ounce container of their French Vanilla flavor has 14 grams of added sugar and 20 grams of total sugar. Yes, you'll get a boost of calcium as they advertise, but you can get calcium with unsweetened yogurt instead.

Yoplait Whips! Key Lime Pie

yoplait whips key lime pie

Sugar per serving: 22 grams (18 grams added sugar)

Yoplait Whips! is marketed as a "light & fluffy" yogurt option, but there's nothing light about its sugar content. With 18 grams of added sugar in just one container, you'll get close to your recommended daily limit with just one snack break.

Yoplait Cherry With Chocolate Shavings

yoplait chocolate shavings

Sugar per serving: 22 grams (18 grams added sugar)

We are continuing on the Yoplait train with their newest line of flavors—their "Made with real chocolate shavings" trio. Whether you choose the Cherry, Strawberry, or Raspberry, you'll be getting around 22 grams of sugar in each carton, thanks to the extra chocolate pieces.

Greek Gods Yogurt Maple With Honey

Greek Gods Maple with Honey

Sugar per serving: 23 grams (15 grams added sugar)

As mentioned earlier, Greek yogurts are often naturally lower in sugar and can therefore be a healthier choice at times. However, be careful to still read the nutrition label because some varieties load up on added sugars, like this Maple with Honey Greek Yogurt from The Greek Gods. You might think this one is healthy at first, but out of the nine ingredients listed, five are some form of sugar, which explains the 23 grams you'll get in each serving.

Go-GURT Tropical Sunglow

Go-Gurt

Sugar per serving: 23 grams (18 grams added sugar)

For decades now, Go-GURT has been known as the tasty yogurt you can eat on the go, which is why it's marketed as the perfect lunchbox snack for kids. However, with more sugar per container than a serving of M&M's, these aren't the healthy snacks they're marketed to be.

LALA Blended Yogurt Piña Colada

LALA pina colada yogurt

Sugar per serving: 24 grams

Anytime you see "low-fat" on a yogurt container, you may want to check the nutrition label for added sugars. It isn't always the case, but oftentimes companies will market a yogurt as healthy because it's lower in fat, but they'll add in more sugar to maintain the flavor and compensate for the lack of fat. This seems to be the case with LALA's Piña Colada yogurt, which possibly rivals a regular Piña colada in sugar content.

Noosa Mates Coconut Chocolate Almond

Noose Mates

Sugar per serving: 26 grams (17 grams added sugar)

Remember how we said that some of the yogurts on our list have more sugar than a serving of ice cream? This is the case with this Noosa yogurt, which has pieces of toasted coconut, almonds, and chocolate chips at the top. You'll still get 9 grams of protein and live active cultures for your gut, but just know that this yogurt is more of a dessert than anything.

LALA Frusion Yogurt Smoothie Banana Berry

LALA Frusion fruit and yogurt smoothie

Sugar per serving: 27 grams

Don't be fooled by the marketing for this LALA Frusion yogurt. It's advertised as a "Fruit yogurt smoothie" and the brand highlights the fact that you'll be getting vitamins A, C, and D, so it may have people thinking it's a healthy choice. But with 27 grams of sugar and absolutely zero fiber, this one is better left on the shelf.

The Highest-Sugar Yogurt: La Yogurt Probiotic Pumpkin Pie

La Yogurt Pumpkin Pie

Sugar per serving: 29 grams

The number one spot on our list of highest-sugar goes to La Yogurt's Probiotic Pumpkin Pie Yogurt. Another example of tricky marketing, this one is touted as low-fat and good for immune support and digestive health. However, even though it offers natural probiotics, with nearly 30 grams of sugar in each carton, you're much better off finding these probiotics in a lower-sugar yogurt.

The post How to Make the Best Steak Sandwich, According to Chefs appeared first on Eat This Not That.

]]>
When it comes to quintessential comfort food, steakhouses are as seared in Americana as apple pie, hot dogs, and barbecue. Iconic dining destinations, steakhouses aren't just for prime rib and ribeye, but for everything from chicken dishes and martinis to burgers and surf and turf. And while most steakhouses are stereotypically ritzy, they're also known for their burly sandwiches.

Steak sandwiches aren't just for steakhouses, but also for houses that have steak (a key distinction). We've already covered the best cuts of steak to cook at home, the best ways to grill your steak, and even mail-order steaks worth ordering. When it comes to crafting the superlative steak sandwich at home, there are factors to consider, like which cuts are ideal, which bread to use, and how to compile it all.

Even when dining at home, it helps to get sandwich recommendations from restaurant pros. So we asked steakhouse chefs to share their tips on how to make the best steak sandwich, with insights into everything from cooking time to slicing technique.

What cut of steak to use

Eye of round roasted beef

When it comes to using the perfect cut of steak, it's all about striking that balance of texture and marbling and lean to fat. "The best cut is usually something that has a nice ratio of fat to lean," explains Jeremiah Stone, chef/partner of the Tusk Bar in New York City. "Marble is always your friend, as well as staying away from too much sinew."

For Hunters Evans, chef of Elvie's in Jackson, Miss., eye of round fits that bill. "I love using the eye of round and treating it like prime rib," he says, citing its leanness and affordability as perks.

Ian Boden, chef at the Shack in Virginia and Tabard Inn in Washington, D.C., agrees: "There are so many variables when it comes to a great steak sandwich, but if we want to make something more traditional, eye of round that's shaved thin is the least expensive option. It's a leaner cut, but the eye comes from the leg, which means it has loads of flavor due to the activity in the muscle."

Skirt steak and flank steak are other popular picks, largely for the ease with which to slice them for sandwiches. "I tend to use skirt or flank steak I get at the Mexican market," says Sophina Uong, chef/owner of Mister Mao in New Orleans, noting to cut the steak across the grain when preparing to serve. "These steaks are tender and lean, but very flavorful," she says.

They are also the preferred cuts for Wyatt Evans, culinary director of P.S. Steak and Jester Concepts in Minneapolis. "Personally, my favorite cut of meat for a steak sandwich is flank or skirt steak," he echoes. "I am looking for something flavorful and affordable with good marbling but not a lot of external fat. Flank and skirt take really well to a strong marinade that helps to flavor the meat, but also keeps it moist on the grill while getting a strong char on the outside."

James Gee echoes those sentiments. According to the chef of Dovetail Bar & Restaurant in Washington, D.C., "skirt has an excellent texture when sliced thin against the grain—that makes for a very beefy yet tender sandwich."

If you want to enrich your sandwich a bit more, Stephanie Izard likes to use ribeye. Chef/owner of Little Goat Diner in Chicago, where she serves her take on a ribeye sammie, Izard likes the cut for its "succulent, fatty" texture that holds up to toppings, cheese, and condiments.

At the end of the day, though, it all comes down to personal preference. As Kristin Beringson, chef of Nashville's Henley, explains: "It's less about the cut of meat you use and more about how you cut the meat you use! You want to be sure to cut small pieces against the grain so that the meat is easy to bite into. I like doing smaller pieces of steak that I slice after I grill them."

How to prepare it

marinade flank steak

In the spirit of how to cut and cook your meat of choice, the next pivotal step is preparation, which can vary wildly based on personal preference and desired sandwich. For some chefs, like Izard, it starts well before the grill with a marinade. "A good marinade is key to flavoring the steak," she says, opting for her own proprietary marinade called This Little Goat Went to Hong Kong "because it has a lot of rich, deep flavors, and when you're cooking the steak, it gets a really nice caramelization."

Gee follows a similar strategy. "For the skirt steak, an overnight marinade with a little minced garlic, black pepper, and thyme, splash of olive oil and a little red wine vinegar" is his MO, while Beringson suggests you "marinate your meat overnight or at least for 30 minutes before grilling or pan roasting."

Likewise, other chefs like to season or rub their steak before heating things up. "The best way to prepare it is to rub it in a lot of seasoning, then roast it very hot in the oven for a short period of time so that the middle is medium rare," Evans says. "From there, you'll chill it and slice it as thin as possible."

Uong likes to rub her steak with olive oil, season it with "lots of kosher salt and cracked black pepper," and then get a griddle to medium-high heat and let the steak grill and caramelize.

After marinating "for at least four hours," Evans suggests cooking the meat on a hot grill and flipping it occasionally until the internal temp reaches 110 degrees Fahrenheit. "Allow to rest for 10 minutes, then return to the grill until an internal temperature of 130-135 degrees [Fahrenheit] is reached," he says.

"When seasoned with coarse, quality salt and grilled medium-rare, steak simply melts in your mouth," explains Iliana de la Vega, chef of El Naranjo in Austin, Texas. "Be sure to cool the meat for seven minutes; then thinly slice against the grain before enjoying."

What bread to use

costco baguette

Now that your steak is selected, seared, cooled, and sliced, it's time to assemble, and all sandwich assemblage begins and ends with bread.

"As far as bread goes, it needs to be toasty and thicker to hold up to the meat," Beringson explains. "I like a baguette situation or a crusty piece of sourdough, and remember that thinner bread will fall apart on you." Other sturdy options include toasted ciabatta, which is the roll of choice for Uong and Stone, while Gee opts for baguette, as well.

According to Gee, "You need a super crackly but delicate baguette, with enough chew to hold the sandwich together, but not so dense that you pull your teeth out when you try to bite into it."

RELATED: 10 Restaurant Chains That Serve the Best Cheesesteaks

What condiments to use

Various condiments

Last but not least, the finishing touch to a winning steak sandwich is the condiment selection, which can be as simple or as decadent as you desire.

"I love to use mayo with beef, and I usually lean towards something with lots of black peppers, herbs, Worcestershire, and a little horseradish for a kick," notes Evans, who also likes adding ingredients with acidity, such as pickles or pickled onions, for some contrast.

Similarly, giardiniera is an option for some zing. It's the condiment of choice for Jonathon Sawyer, chef of Chicago's Kindling. He calls it a "spicy and salty condiment that originated from the culinary frugality of Italian-Americans in Chicago." Sawyer gets his giardiniera from J.P. Graziano, a longtime Italian market and sandwich shop in Chicago that's been open since 1937.

"For a simple baguette steak sandwich, I like just butter, chopped parsley, and sliced tomatoes," de la Vega explains. But for a Mexican-style iteration, using bolillo or telera bread, she likes to smear one side of the bread with crema Mexicana and the other side with refried beans, and then layer sliced beef with tomatoes, avocado, and pickled vegetables.

For added extravagance, Beringson likes condiments such as horseradish mayo, blue cheese, chipotle aïoli, and Havarti cheese. Uong uses everything from grilled mushrooms and watercress to chimichurri and Dijon mayo. Izard, meanwhile, doubles down on ribeye richness.

"When it's almost fully cooked to your liking, we add caramelized onion and melt cheese on top to triple up on richness, then we add pickled red onions and jalapeños, as well as an herby-limey mayo, to add tangy brightness," Izard says.

The most important thing to remember when making a steak sandwich, Izard adds, is to keep everything balanced. "Make sure you have all the key components of a dish, like rich, savory notes and brightness, and, of course, a layers of texture."

The post I Tried 6 Store-Bought Salsas & the Best Was Chunky and Fresh Tasting appeared first on Eat This Not That.

]]>
Salsa is a staple in many homes, whether it's there waiting to be served as an appetizer to guests at a party or it's on tap as an after-school snack.

From classic tomato to tomatillo-based dips and from thick and hearty bean salsas to sweet, fruity mixtures, the world of jarred salsas is vast and varied. Anyone who has shopped for salsa in the grocery store knows how overwhelming the options can be.

Aside from the base ingredients, salsas vary in spice level and texture. Some shoppers might want a super chunky tomato dip that packs a punch of heat, while others prefer a light and smooth salsa without a pepper in sight. No matter your preference, there is a salsa for you at the grocery store.

Not everyone has the time or inclination to personally work their way through the salsa aisle to find the best dip—but I do. To find the best-tasting salsa, I sampled six dips from the most popular and easy-to-find brands.

I tried each salsa on its own and with a tortilla chip (my favorites are Somos Unusually Thick & Crunchy Tortilla Chips) to asses flavor, texture, spice level, and how well the dip adheres to a chip. The best salsa is not too salty (tortilla chips have plenty of salt) and has staying power after a dip. The salsa shouldn't be so watery as to slide right off the chip, nor should it be so chunky that a tortilla chip cracks under the load.

Find the perfect salsa for your needs below. Here's how these six grocery store jarred salsas stacked up, ranked in descending order.

Tostitos Restaurant Style Medium Salsa

tositos salsa

PER SERVING (2 tablespoons): 15 cal, 0 g fat (0 g saturated fat), 210 mg sodium, 3 g carbs (1 g fiber, 1 g sugar), 1 g protein

As a big fan of Tostitos regular salsa, I was disappointed by the texture and flavor of the brand's restaurant-style dip. This blend is made with onions and jalapeños in addition to two varieties of tomatoes.

The look: There's so much liquid in the jar that the tiny bits of tomato, onion, and jalapeño appear to be floating. Rather than having a cohesive texture, the components of the salsa are easily distinguished from one another.

The taste: Water is the second ingredient in this product, and, unfortunately, that's reflected in the flavor and texture. This is a very loose, thin, and watery dip that doesn't stick well to a chip. Compared to the other products I tested, it's bland. It does, however, taste more like a fresh pico de gallo than a savory jarred salsa.

365 By Whole Foods Market Thick & Chunky Medium Salsa

365 salsa

PER SERVING (2 tablespoons): 10 cal, 0 g fat (0 g saturated fat), 140 mg sodium, 2 g carbs (<1 g fiber, 1 g sugar), 0 g protein

This store-brand salsa is perfectly fine but not memorable. It's fully organic and flavored with onion, jalapeños, garlic powder, and cayenne.

The look: This salsa is finely puréed until it's nearly smooth. There are tiny visible chunks of perfectly minced white onion, but you won't find any meaty pieces of tomato in this sauce. It's good for dipping, though, and leaves a thin, uniform coating on a tortilla chip.

The taste: This salsa tasted the sweetest of the bunch. Though it doesn't have any added sugars listed in the ingredients, it does contain tomato juice, which can be sweet. I prefer my salsas savory and umami-rich, so this was not my favorite.

Fronterra Tomatillo Salsa

frontera tomatillo salsa

PER SERVING (2 tablespoons): 10 cal, 0 g fat (0 g saturated fat), 150 mg sodium, 2 g carbs (<1 g fiber, <1 g sugar), 1 g protein

This was the only tomatillo-based salsa I tried, and it had a different flavor and look than the tomato-forward dips. In addition to fire-roasted tomatillos, this dip is made with tomatoes, onions, and serrano peppers.

The look: This salsa also has water listed as a prominent ingredient, and it has a thin, liquid texture. It's also grassy green, thanks to the tomatillos, and has been very finely puréed into a uniform texture. You can see specks of black from where the tomatillos and tomatoes were fire-roasted, as well as pepper seeds, presumably from the serranos.

The taste: This wasn't the most flavorful of the salsas I tried, but it did have a unique smoky flavor and offered a bit of heat at the back of the throat. This is a popular product for making crockpot chicken, so it may be better used as a cooking sauce.

Siete Mild Salsa Roja

siete mild salsa

PER SERVING (2 tablespoons): 10 cal, 0 g fat (0 g saturated fat), 240 mg sodium, 2 g carbs (1 g fiber, 1 g sugar), 0 g protein

This salsa roja comes in a squat 4-ounce jar, which may not be enough if you're hosting a Super Bowl party, but I appreciate the smaller size because I never seem to be able to finish an 8-ounce jar of salsa before it goes bad. This salsa also has a noticeably shorter ingredient list than most of the jars I sampled.

The look: This salsa has more texture to it than many puréed options. There are small (but not teensy) chunks of tomato, jalapeños, onions, and garlic in the mix. You can see that the tomatoes were roasted, as there are specks of blackened tomato skin throughout.

The taste: This salsa has a deep concentrated tomato flavor. It's a touch sweet (but not nearly as sweet as the 365 brand product) and salty (it has a higher sodium content than most of the salsas in this test). Roasting the tomatoes brings out their natural sweetness and umami, which are both heightened in this dip by fresh lemon juice and sea salt. You also get a nice herby finish from cilantro.

Green Mountain Gringo Medium Salsa

green mountain gringo salsa

PER SERVING (1 tablespoon): 12 cal, 1 g fat (0 g saturated fat), 82 mg sodium, 2 g carbs (1 g fiber, 0 g sugar), 0 g protein

This salsa is made with a blend of tomatoes and tomatillos, three kinds of fresh peppers, as well as both cilantro and parsley. It's full of flavor and has a nice meaty texture that you'll want to scoop right up with a tortilla chip.

The look: This salsa is for chunk lovers. There are generous pieces of diced tomato and tomatillo interspersed with green peppers (pastillas, serranos, and jalapeño) and nubs of real garlic. It has a rustier red color than some of the other salsas I sampled.

The taste: This dip has an almost fresh flavor, if that's possible from a shelf-stable jarred sauce. The combination of tomatoes, peppers, and real herbs gives this dip a homemade touch, and the juicy chunks are super satisfying to scoop up with a chip.

Late July Medium Salsa

late july medium salsa

PER SERVING (2 tablespoons): 10 cal, 0 g fat (0 g saturated fat), 110 mg sodium, 2 g carbs (0 g fiber, 1 g sugar), 0 g protein

Late July's thick and chunky medium organic salsa hits the right notes of flavor, heat, and texture. It's fully organic and contains bell peppers, two kinds of fresh chilies, and both garlic and garlic powder, in addition to the tomato base.

The look: This salsa has a bold red color and a texture that's both loose and chunky. The tomato purée separates a bit from the meaty chunks of diced tomato, so you get the best of both worlds. You can also see (and smell) the fresh garlic throughout the mixture.

The taste: This salsa is perfectly spiced and seasoned. It's not overly salty and certainly not sweet. It has a touch of heat that keeps you coming back for more, and the large chunks of tomato taste fresh and juicy. This is a crowd-pleasing salsa made for all taste buds.
